VMware launches new virtualisation platform for SMBs

Claims to enable companies accelerate the evolution of data centers and service providers into cloud

Vmware has introduced VMware vSphere 4.1, an expanded portfolio of virtualisation management offerings designed to advance scalability and improve performance to provide small and midsize businesses (SMBs) with a more powerful foundation for cloud computing.

The company said that VMware virtualisation enables enterprises and service providers to lay the foundation for cloud computing by aggregating an elastic pool of computing resources that can be accessed while enabling policy-based automation and management to increase efficiency.

Raghu Raghuram, senior vice president and general manager of virtualisation and cloud platforms at Vmware, said: "Virtualisation occupies an increasingly central position within IT strategy as the cornerstone of modern infrastructures and the foundation for cloud computing.

"As the market leader, VMware vSphere is redefining the economics of computing, while helping customers to achieve the levels of utilisation and automation that underpin the promise of cloud computing."

Vmware said that the VMware vCenter Server can now manage up to 10,000 concurrently powered on VMs three times as many as before; has new memory management and expanded resource pooling capabilities; enabling customers to aggregate twice the computing resources within a single pool; and offers up to 25% better performance and reduced cost per application.

The company said that VMware vMotion is now included in new platform, which delivers the most advanced live migration capability, enabling customers to rapidly migrate virtual machines across hardware environments without interrupting business operations.

Vmware said its new offering will enable companies to accelerate the evolution of data centers and service providers into cloud computing environments.
